Expectations for Lab & Simulation Activities
In order to create a safe learning environment and preserve valuable equipment and supplies, there are specific expectations for dress and conduct during Lab and Simulation activities.
- Locate and always follow Lab Rules posted in the Lab:
- Wear full clinical uniform
- Practice professional behavior, including HIPAA
- No food or gum
- Beverages must be closed with a lid
- Turn phones off or silence them (step out to take or make a call)
- Notify instructor when leaving/returning if you must leave during instruction
- Use hallway restrooms
- No students in supply room
- Leave all work areas cleaner than when you found them
- Wear full clinical uniform
- Nursing students will adhere to the dress code for professional appearance as described in the Nursing Student Handbook.
- To comply with fire code restrictions about the number of students allowed in the lab at any one time, occasionally a student may be asked to wait outside or in Room 131 until other students leave. Be prepared with study materials in case a short wait is required.
- Cell phones are to be turned off or silenced. If you need to take or make a phone call, please step out into the hall to do so.
- Utilize sharps containers to dispose of all sharp or glass objects, for example needles, stylets, glass ampules and glass tubes or vials. Any sharps disposed of in the trash is unsafe practice and will result in a documented warning.
- Do not place any other objects except "sharps" in a sharps container.
- Clean the area after you are finished using it. Wall-mounted cleaning wipes are available in each room. Professionals are responsible to keep all working areas clean, so get in the habit early of always leaving things cleaner than when you found them.
- Shoes are never allowed on beds. If students are practicing head-to-toe assessments, or need to occupy a bed for any other reason, please remove shoes before getting onto the bed.
- It is expected that the Lab & Simulation Center will be used for practice in order to master necessary professional skills. Bring stethoscope, wristwatch, pen, and other equipment and resource materials with you. Arrive with skills in mind that you want to practice.
- Do not use Practice Lab for study time. If you are finished practicing your skills, you may sign out of Practice Lab and then utilize Room 131 as a study area.
- Students are not allowed to enter the supply room. Notify an employee present in the Lab if you need any additional equipment to practice with.
- Notify the employee present or a lab coordinator if any sharps containers are full, if handwashing solution is empty, if gloves need to be replaced, or if any equipment does not work.
- When leaving the lab, your work area should look like this (see left). Properly dispose of sharps in a sharps container and place all other trash in the trash can. Wipe all surfaces with the wipes provided. Lower the bed to the flat position, with all 4 side-rails lowered. Clean up and cover the manikin, and make the bed so it is very neat (leaving bedspread un-tucked). Pull the privacy curtain all the way back and fasten it with the chain. Place the lowered bedside table next to the bed and the trash can at the foot of the bed.
Simulation will be available during selected Practice Lab times. Please refer to the Simulation Tab for additional expectations that pertain to the simulation area.
